Metal Detecting
Some Valuable Tips For Metal Detectors
Are you a metal detector? Do you want to be? I’m not talking about the actual piece of equipment. I’m talking about the activity itself. Well, if you want to go out there and start digging up some buried treasure, there are a few things that you will probably want to tuck away in the back of your mind before you get started. This article will hopefully get you on your way with the least amount of effort.
Let’s start off with a reality check, because this is where most people get tripped up. Sure, there is some incredible stuff buried out there. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort to find it, you could come away with a small fortune. However, for the most part, the stuff you’re going to find in your own backyard, figuratively speaking, isn’t going to buy you a new yacht. If you keep things in perspective, you can have a lot of fun with your new hobby. Just don’t expect to get rich off of it and you might end up pleasantly surprised when you DO find something of value.
Secondly, you need to decide how serious you’re going to be about this. The reason I am saying this is because there are a number of things involved in metal detecting. You’ve got local laws, the equipment you’re going to use, items needed for cleaning, identifying and so on. With the exception of the laws, the rest of this stuff costs money. A good metal detector is not cheap. So you have to decide if this is just going to be for fun, or are you serious about what you’re doing. If you’re serious, get good equipment.
Finally, after buying everything you need, there’s the actual use. If you think you’re just going to take a metal detector out of the box and have it find you the lost treasures of the Aztecs, you’ve got another thing coming. You need to learn how to use everything at your disposal. Not just the detector but all the accessories that you’re going to need for digging, cleaning and so on. I guess this also goes back to how serious you’re going to be about this.
Like I said, this can be a lot of fun. There is nothing like the thrill of digging up something that was buried many years ago…no matter how valuable it is or isn’t. But make no mistake about it…metal detecting is a lot of work if you want to do it right.
